JOSH ROWE

After finishing his B.Sc in Geology, Josh sold his car for his first camera and motorbike. He started out shooting big wave surfing and rugby for fun and aspired to become a photographer. However, once he had been exposed to the world of TV and editing he made the transition into cinematography as a freelancer. He draws his inspiration from life around him – nature, natural and created light, art, old music, and humans in general.

Josh believes that a DOP needs to not only be able to understand light intimately but also how to balance crew within a department as well as being able to problem solve and communicate effectively with the director to fully achieve the vision. He loves every aspect of the industry – the light, the people, the changing environments, and the never ending learning journey from the crew around him.

Josh was born in Pretoria and grew up between Mpumalanga and Knysna but he now calls Cape Town home. His only wish on set is to have more light, crew and time as lighting is vital to any shoot and needs many hands in order to get it right.
