Having heard the words “lights, camera, action” for the first time in high school, Gaopie decided to make a career change from engineering to arts major immediately. Her unwavering dedication to the craft has seen her work her way up the ranks over the years from loader to DOP.
She believes in the power of strong collaborations, is excellent at managing the tasks of the department, and lives by the statement “Don’t fix it in post, fix in pre-production”. In spending time finding and defining visual choices and structures, one can support a narrative visually in ways that help to elevate the story and the director’s vision. Gaopie defines cinematography as her ‘life’ where she notices the lighting and mood in any space. Born and raised in Soweto and destined to go far, she likes to work alongside people who respect the art and craft of good story telling.
